Antarctic left Gothenburg on 16 October 1901 and arrived in the South Shetland Islands in January 1902.

He found a fossil wonderland - one of the last untouched fossil fields on the planet. It was discovered by Otto Nordenskjold and was named to honor the Swedish Antarctic Expedition members Andersson, Duse and Grunden, who were forced to spend a desperate winter there in 1903. Remains of their humble stone hut are still there, beside the brightly colored red buildings of the nearby Argentine Esperanza station. He was Captain Larsen of the Antarctic for Otto Nordenskjold's 1901 expedition.
